From Kalamata in southern direction, a panoramic road leads through the hilly landscape. After about 45 minutes from Kalamata in northern direction, passing fields, wide olive groves and the Kambos gorge, the recently well-built road leads along gentle hills and small villages. This is how you get to the charming village of Kardamili. Already known in the writings of Homer and Asclepius as a healing place, the old village of Kardamili has preserved its charm. The upper old town with the elaborately restored Mourzinos Castle and the small Mani Museum and old fresh water springs, offer attractive local excursion destinations.
Life in the lower old town, with its small cafes, ouzerias, and nice stores, is leisurely. Quite a few people have fallen in love with the area, returning here regularly or deciding to become residents altogether, having time and interest in guests. The chirping of the cicadas is omnipresent from June to October. The many wild herbs flatter the sense of smell. A kilometer long gravel/sand beach with crystal clear water promises pure bathing pleasure. Kardamili offers itself as a starting point for various day excursions.
The beautiful Kambos Gorge, cultural treasures from Byzantine times, small chapels and fortified towers, form the backdrop of Kardamili. Nightlife takes place mainly in Stoupa, 7 kilometers to the south. Here bars & clubs have adapted to their internationally mixed audience. Kardamilie`s small taverns and coffee houses in the old town, lovingly take care of their guests. Traditional Greek food, but also some international dishes determine the local cuisine. Fish is not cheap, but always freshly caught. The vegetable garden of Maniatisa is well organized and provides for the whole family, as well as guests. Quality is still important. So own olive oil and self-pressed wine belongs to the daily routine in the taverns.
There is a regular bus service between Kalamata, Kardamili, further to Stoupa and Itilo. The transfer time from Kalamata airport to Kardamili is about 1 hour. The offer of accommodation consists mainly of the typical natural stone houses. But also lovingly developed hotels, studios and apartments present themselves in the predominantly traditional Taygethos building style of gray and terracotta-colored natural stones, which fit so harmoniously into the natural environment. This piece of measured mainland presents itself as Individual Greece in a particularly charming ambience. Olive groves stretch from the slopes of the Taygethos Mountains down to the coast. Bizarre rock formations, small hidden bathing bays, sand as well as pebble beaches and a hiker's paradise with old connecting paths and attractive routes through traditional mountain villages, past old churches, monasteries and fortifications.
The small taverns and restaurants in Kardamili offer local delicacies and international cuisine. Some of the regional dishes are barbounia (red mullet), lamb in red sauce (kleftiko`), beef goulash (stifado), ziklino of smoked and salted pork and of course moussaka`, pasti`zio pasta dishes and suckling pig.
