From Kalamata in a southerly direction, a panoramic road leads through the hilly landscape. After about 45 minutes from the north of Kalamata, past fields, wide olive groves and the Kambos Gorge, the recently well-developed country road leads along gentle hills and small villages. This is how you get into the charming village of Kardamili. The old village of Kardamili, which was already known as a sanatorium in the writings of Homer and Asclepius, has retained its charm. The upper old town with the elaborately restored Mourzinos castle complex and the small Mani Museum and old freshwater springs, offer attractive local excursion destinations.
Life in the lower old town with its small cafes, ouzerias, and nice shops is leisurely. Quite a few have fallen in love with the surroundings, return here regularly, or decide to become permanent residents. You have time and interest in guests. The chirping of the cicadas is omnipresent from June to October. The many wild herbs flatter the sense of smell. A kilometre-long pebble/sandy beach with crystal clear water promises pure bathing pleasure. Kardamili is a good starting point for various day trips.
The beautiful Kambos Gorge, cultural treasures from Byzantine times, small chapels and defensive towers, form the backdrop of Kardamili. The nightlife takes place mainly in Stoupa, 7 kilometers to the south. Here, bars and clubs have adapted to their internationally mixed clientele. Kardamilie's small taverns and coffee houses in the old town lovingly take care of their guests. Traditional Greek dishes, but also some international dishes determine the local cuisine. Fish is not cheap, but always freshly caught. The vegetable garden of the Maniatisa is well organized and caters for the whole family, as well as guests. Quality is still important. For example, their own olive oil and home-made wine are the order of the day in the taverns.
There is a regular bus service between Kalamata, Kardamili, on to Stoupa and Itilo. The transfer time from Kalamata Airport to Kardamili takes about 1 hour. The offer of accommodation consists mainly of typical natural stone houses. But also lovingly built hotels, studios and apartments present themselves in the predominantly traditional Taygetos architectural style made of grey and terracotta-coloured natural stones, which blend harmoniously into the natural surroundings. This piece of the Messinian mainland presents itself as an individual Greece in a particularly charming ambience. The olive groves stretch from the slopes of the Taygethos Mountains down to the coast. Bizarre rock formations, small hidden bays, sand and pebble beaches and a hiking paradise with old connecting paths and attractive routes through traditional mountain villages, past old churches, monasteries and fortifications.
The small taverns and restaurants in Kardamili offer local delicacies and international cuisine. Some of the regional dishes are barbounia (red mullet, lamb in red sauce (kleftiko'), beef goulash (stifado), ziklino of smoked and salted pork and of course moussaka', pasti'zio pasta dishes and suckling pig.
