can still be found in the Messinian harbor town of Agios Nikolaos. The natural stone houses, guesthouses and studios offered to guests are built in the traditional Mani style from the stone of the gray Taygethos Mountains and lovingly furnished for its mostly individual guests whose focus is on relaxation, originality and tranquility.
Many creative people from all over the world have chosen this catchment area with its particularly charming atmosphere as their adopted home. Here they find motivation and creativity for their work. The gently rolling hills are covered in the everlasting silvery green of the olive groves. The traditional olive harvest season begins in mid-October and continues well into January. A special time to spend with friends and family. Traditional dishes such as lamb and goat are prepared and the fires are lit. Around the harbor and on the promenade there are small fish taverns and nice bars and cafes.
The fishing boats bring in their night's catch in the morning to sell it fresh at the harbor.
Many nature lovers deliberately prefer this time of conviviality after the summer months to experience hikes and explorations of the surrounding area with all its Byzantine past, fortified towers and old mountain villages.
It's a cozy place. Visitors will find a small, romantic fishing village here. Colorful kaiki boats bobbing amusingly on the water of the harbor pier and fishermen mending nets convey the image of ancient Greece.
Nice and lovingly furnished tavernas (for fish mezedes), a post office, bakery, several small mini markets, cafes & the lovely sun... charming, manageable. Especially popular for its view, snacks and refreshments is the lovingly run Lithos Cafe`directly on the promenade. The Rafti` Tavern in a small side street is a meeting place for good, local cuisine with fish and lamb specialties - small money!
On the small harbor promenade, "big politics" are played and the weekly lottery ticket is quickly handed in in the hope of hitting the big jackpot.
But nobody actually wants anything to change...
And that's a good thing.
Simply a small fishing village, where couples in love sit on the quay wall at sunset, just a few meters away from the large Greek family who have just come from nearby Pandazi or Kalliopi beach for a frappe at Kostakis.
Simply beautiful to "escape" from the increasingly hectic everyday life at home and to really relax again ...
